A Life in History
John Davies Other books by John Davies
The English version of Welsh historian John Davies' autobiography, translated by Jon Gower.
The distinguished historian John Davies made an enormous contribution to Welsh life and culture over more than half a century. Here, in his own words, he recalls his upbringing in industrial Rhondda in the 1940s, in rural Cardiganshire in the 1950s, and describes the growth of the Welsh nationalist movement in the 1960s, leading to the establishment of the National Assembly. He was for many years a popular and influential warden at Pantycelyn Hall in Aberystwyth, yet found time to complete the prestigious Penguin "A History of Wales" and other substantial works.
This honest and engaging autobiography reveals his zest for life and travel. He emerges as a caring family man, who doted on his children and grandchildren, and also a gardener who loved seeing life bloom in nature.
"John's memoir first appeared in Welsh and is now published in Jon Gower's translation with the title A Life in History. It is a delightful read, capturing all the wit and adventure of the author's life and reminding us of that quite remarkable quality (and expression) of delight that characterised John's reaction to making a new friend or discovering a new place." - Peter Stead, the Welsh Agenda
