Mari Elis

Mari Ellis MA was born in 1913 at the Vicarage in Dylife, Montgomeryshire. She was educated at John Bright School, Llandudno. She graduated in Welsh from University College, Bangor in 1936 and received an MA in 1938 on The Poetry of Llawddon and Rhys Nanmor. She was an Assistant Librarian in Kingston-Upon-Thames, Surrey (1943-44) and at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth (1944-49) before marrying Thomas Iorwerth Ellis and having two children. She has lived in Aberystwyth ever since.

In 1952 she won the Crown at the Powys Eisteddfod, for a novel, Awelon Darowen which was published in 1965. The novel was based on the life of Thomas Richards (1754-1837), the vicar of Darowen, and his family. This signified the start of research into the 'literary parsons' who established the regional eisteddfodau, 1819-34. The ensuing work entailed researching the lives of fifteen clergymen, including Walter Davies, Gwallter Mechain and Thomas Price, Carnhuanawc. Her publications include: Eglwysi Cymru (with Marged Dafydd) (1985) and Y Golau Gwan (1999).

She has contributed to Llên Cymru, Bywgraffiadur Cymraeg and Cydymaith i Lenyddiaeth Cymru (1986 and 1997). She has written articles and reviews for numerous periodicals. She edited a women's page for Y Cymro and edited a selection: Ffenest y Gegin (1965). She has been editor of Aberystwyth's community paper Yr Angor.
