Bryan Morse is a retired schoolteacher a History Graduate of the University of Wales. Inspired by a boyhood friendship with two American soldiers billeted with a next-door neighbour he has produced a fascinating true story of the unique situation when thousands of American soldiers were billeted in the private homes prior to the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944.
During his extensive research he established a strong friendship with former GIs that has extended over many years. He has received masses of official documents plus private letters and a huge quantity of wartime photographs of the American troops and their units plus personal memories. Unfortunately with the passage of time the number of GIs has diminished but there are still a few now well in their nineties are still in contact.
The young American soldiers, many still in their teens, never forgot their friendly Rhondda hosts. The Rhondda, famous for its coal production was also famed for its hospitality - it lived up to its reputation.
